چکیده

People frequently evaluate facial attractiveness and make We tested four acquired prosopagnosics. Florence is a 29inferences about character traits from faces, and these evaluations are consistent across observers (Todorov, Said, & Verosky, 2011). Do these face evaluations rely on the same perceptual mechanisms as facial identity recognition? Recent studies claim they do not. Some individuals with developmental prosopagnosia make typical trustworthiness (Todorov & Duchaine, 2008) and attractiveness (Carbon, Grüter, Grüter, Weber, & Lueschow, 2010) judgments, and one acquired prosopagnosic judged attractiveness and several character traits normally (Quadflieg, Todorov, Laguesse, & Rossion, 2012). These studies however suffer from three methodological limitations that raise concerns about the validity of their findings. First, face evaluations were measured only with ratings, a format that may not be sensitive enough to detect subtle impairments. Second, while face evaluations were measured with ratings, identity perception was assessed with different formats. Third, the faces evaluated by prosopagnosics in two studies (Carbon et al., 2010; Quadflieg et al., 2012) were in color and included hair. Both hair and color can influence evaluations (Stephen, Coetzee, & Perrett, 2011; Todorov & Duchaine, 2008) and some prosopagnosics can perceive these cues normally (Fox, Hanif, Iaria, Duchaine, & Barton, , 2011; Garrido et al., 2009). To overcome these limitations here we investigated perceptions of facial attractiveness, trustworthiness and aggressiveness for greyscale faces without external facial cues. We assessed each evaluation using three formats: rating, sorting, and categorisation. We chose attractiveness because of its evolutionary importance (Rhodes, 2006), and trustworthiness and aggressiveness because of their central roles in a leading model of face evaluation (Oosterhof & Todorov, 2008).

Emotional attention in acquired prosopagnosia.

The present study investigated whether emotionally expressive faces guide attention and modulate fMRI activity in fusiform gyrus in acquired prosopagnosia. Patient PS, a pure case of acquired prosopagnosia with intact right middle fusiform gyrus, performed two behavioral experiments and a functional imaging experiment to address these questions. In a visual search task involving face stimuli, P...

Implicit attitudes in prosopagnosia.

We studied a male with acquired prosopagnosia using a battery of Implicit Association Tests (IATs) to investigate whether observing faces varying by social category would activate the patient's implicit social biases. We also asked him to categorize faces explicitly by race, gender, and political party. The patient, G.B., was marginally slower to categorize black compared to white faces. He sho...

The man who mistook his neuropsychologist for a popstar: when configural processing fails in acquired prosopagnosia

We report the case of an individual with acquired prosopagnosia who experiences extreme difficulties in recognizing familiar faces in everyday life despite excellent object recognition skills. Formal testing indicates that he is also severely impaired at remembering pre-experimentally unfamiliar faces and that he takes an extremely long time to identify famous faces and to match unfamiliar face...

Impaired holistic processing of unfamiliar individual faces in acquired prosopagnosia.

Prosopagnosia is an impairment at individualizing faces that classically follows brain damage. Several studies have reported observations supporting an impairment of holistic/configural face processing in acquired prosopagnosia. However, this issue may require more compelling evidence as the cases reported were generally patients suffering from integrative visual agnosia, and the sensitivity of...

The role of holistic face processing in acquired prosopagnosia: evidence from the composite face effect

Faces are processed more holistically than other objects, and it has been suggested that the loss of holistic face processing causes acquired prosopagnosia. Support for this hypothesis comes from several cases who failed to show holistic face effects as well as the absence of reports of prosopagnosics with unequivocally normal holistic face perception. The current study examines the relationshi...
